Solar panels are a piece of cutting-edge technology, but as modern as they are, they’re still susceptible to the effects of Mother Nature—including the wildlife that lives around your home. Birds, squirrels, and other wildlife can interfere with your solar power system in a lot of ways. Understanding the effects that wildlife can have on your solar panels and how to prevent it from negatively impacting your productivity can help you protect your investment, as well as the animals around you.

    Nesting Under and Around Panels

Solar panels can provide inviting spaces for wildlife to seek shelter. The shaded, protected gap between the panels and the roof can be a perfect nesting spot for birds, squirrels, and even small rodents. Once a nest is built, it can restrict airflow around your panels, leading to overheating and reduced energy efficiency. Nesting materials can also clog gutters or pose a fire hazard if they come in contact with the electrical components of the system.

If you have a lot of wildlife in your area, it’s probably a good idea to take preventative measures and install guards or mesh around the perimeter of your panels. These barriers allow air to continue circulating while blocking animals from entering the space underneath. Whether you have the guards or not, regularly inspecting your system for any signs of nesting can help you deal with any intrusive animals quickly.

    Wire Damage from Gnawing

Rodents and squirrels are notorious for chewing through cables and insulation. The warmth and electrical hum of the wiring seems to attract these critters, and once they start gnawing, they can quickly cause short circuits or even system failures. Damaged wires can also pose a safety hazard that can lead to potential fire risks and costly repairs.

Prevent this by putting protective cable covers or conduit around exposed wiring. You can also use rodent-resistant materials or deterrent sprays around the areas you’re concerned about. Routine maintenance checks can also ensure that any signs of chewing or frayed wires are detected early before they lead to major damage.

    Bird Droppings on Solar Panels

Bird droppings can seem like a minor inconvenience, but they can significantly reduce the efficiency of your solar panels. When droppings cover a portion of a panel, they block sunlight, decreasing energy production. Over time, the acidic nature of droppings can also damage the panel’s surface if they’re not cleaned off.

Consider installing bird deterrents like spikes, reflective tape, or ultrasonic devices to discourage birds from perching near your panels. You can also ensure that trees near your home are trimmed back; this prevents birds from perching in branches above your panels while also preventing shading that would drive down your energy production.

Protecting your solar panels with humane deterrents can protect your panels while also protecting the animals around you from harm. By following these tips, you can keep your Phono Solar module working at higher efficiency and continue living in harmony with nature.
