Guelph is a university town, a growing tech and agriculture hub and one of the most liveable mid-sized cities in Ontario. It is also a city with a well-developed legal cannabis market. Since Ontario opened the door to private retail stores, Guelph residents have gone from a single option to a long list of storefronts across downtown, the south end and the main corridors.
More choice is a good thing, but it raises a common question: how do you pick the right one? This guide covers what to look for, what to avoid and how to get the most out of your visit.
Start with the law
Ontario’s legal age for buying and consuming cannabis is 19. You can carry up to 30 grams of dried cannabis, or the equivalent in other formats, in public. Only stores authorized by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario can legally sell recreational cannabis, and those stores must source their products through the provincial wholesaler.
That system protects you. Products from authorized stores are produced by federally licensed growers, tested for potency and contaminants and sold in packaging with a federal excise stamp. If a shop cannot show that, it is not a legal store.
Why the right dispensary matters
While all authorized stores draw from the same provincial supply, the experience they offer can be very different. Some carry a narrow selection focused on the cheapest products. Others curate a wider range, including craft flower, solventless concentrates and new edibles and beverages. Some staff will simply ring you through, while others will spend a few minutes helping you find something that actually fits your needs.
