
A VPS plan can look powerful on paper and still perform badly once your website goes live. The safest choice is not the plan with the biggest numbers, but the one that matches your workload, traffic, network needs, and recovery requirements.
Before buying, look beyond the headline price. CPU quality, usable RAM, storage performance, international bandwidth, backup recovery, support scope, and upgrade limits can matter more than the plan name.
Start With the Workload, Not the Plan Table
Before comparing CPU or RAM, list everything the server will run.
A basic business website has different needs from a WooCommerce store, SaaS platform, CRM, ERP system, customer dashboard, API, database server, or development environment.
Also include services that work quietly in the background. Email, control panels, security tools, monitoring, scheduled jobs, backups, and database processes all consume resources.

Check latency, packet loss, jitter, and route stability. One low ping result is less useful than consistent performance during busy hours.
Check Whether KVM or LXC Fits the Workload
Virtualization affects control, isolation, operating system choices, and resource use.
KVM creates a complete virtual machine with its own operating system environment. It usually offers stronger isolation and more control, making it suitable for production applications, custom configurations, and workloads that require kernel level flexibility.
LXC uses container based virtualization and shares the host kernel. It can be efficient and cost effective for Linux websites, development environments, and lighter applications.
KVM does not automatically mean the physical CPU is dedicated to your VPS. CPU, network, and storage resources may still be shared unless the provider clearly states otherwise.
Choose the virtualization type according to the workload instead of assuming one option is always better.
Find Out What “Backups Included” Actually Covers
A provider may say that backups are included without explaining how they work.
You need to know:
- How often backups are created
- How many copies are retained
- How long each backup is kept
- Whether backups are stored outside the VPS
- Whether you can restore files yourself
- Whether full server restoration is available
- How long recovery usually takes
- Whether restoration has an additional fee
A snapshot is useful before a software update or major configuration change, but it is not always a complete disaster recovery solution.
RAID can protect against some disk failures, but RAID is not a backup. It does not protect you from accidental deletion, malware, account compromise, or a damaged database.
A backup is only useful when it can be restored. Ask the provider about the restore process before you need it.
For important business systems, keep your own separate copy of critical files and databases even when provider backups are available.
Review IP Addresses, Access, and Operating Systems
Confirm whether the VPS includes a dedicated IPv4 address and whether IPv6 is available.
Additional IP addresses may cost extra and may require technical justification. If a Thai IP address is important for your application, ask the provider to confirm the allocation before purchase.
Root access gives you full control of a Linux server, but it also gives you full responsibility.
Check whether the control panel allows you to restart, reinstall, access the console, change the operating system, and use rescue mode if the server becomes unreachable.
Available systems may include Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, or Windows Server. Windows and commercial control panels may require separate licence fees.
Understand Security, Uptime, and Support
Basic security features may include a network firewall, DDoS protection, monitoring, and access controls.
These do not replace server hardening. You may still need to secure SSH, install updates, configure firewall rules, protect administrative accounts, and monitor logs.
Read the uptime guarantee and Service Level Agreement carefully. Check what counts as downtime, what compensation is offered, and whether planned maintenance is excluded.
A public status page and uptime history can reveal more than a general claim such as “high availability.”
Also ask what support actually covers.
Twenty four hour support may only include network, hardware, and VPS access issues. It may not include website errors, database repair, malware removal, software updates, or application troubleshooting.

A growing website should not require a complete migration every time traffic increases.
